Patrolman Alfred Sturdivant was shot and killed after responding to a domestic disturbance. The male victim claimed that his wife had chased him out of the home with a pistol. Patrolman Sturdivant was shot three times by the suspect as he and other officers attempted a forced entry to take the barricaded suspect into the custody. During the ensuing standoff the woman fired more then 40 rounds at officers. She was finally taken into custody after running out of ammunition.

The suspect was committed to the Worcester Insane Asylum.

Patrolman Sturdivant had been with the agency for 15 years and was survived by his wife. [odmp.org]

The son of Gardiner Mitchell Sturdivant (1819-1851, born in Cumberland, ME) and Harriet Russell (1824-1906, born in Falmouth, ME). By 1860, Harriet was married to Samuel M. Brackett in Maine, Albert is listed as Step-son.

The husband of Emma Florence Albertson whom he married January 31, 1884 in Boston. Alfred was 31 years and Emma was 26 years on the date of their marriage. Emma was born in Boston and the daughter of William S. Albertson and Lydia Small Loveland.

Patrolman Sturdivant is the second police officer to suffer death in the discharge of his duty since the organization of the Boston police force. In October of the year 1857, the year of Patrolman Sturdivant's birth, Wentworth Hodsdon of East Boston was shot and killed by a burglar at the corner of Maverick and Havre streets.
