Shannon Edward Harkey Jr
January 9, 1932 - April 14, 2014

Shannon Edward Harkey Jr., age 82, passed away peacefully at his home in Menifee, on April 14, 2014, with his loving wife of 57 years, Idamae Harkey at his side. He leaves with us six children including his daughter, Debbie, and his five sons, Dan, Mike, Dean, Doug and Dennis. He has 17 Grandchildren and 8 Great Grandchildren, with two more on the way. He was one of 10 children, and is also survived by his sister, Shirley Lester and his brother, William Harkey, as well as many nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved.

Shannon was born on January 9, 1932 in Denver Colorado to Mattie and Shannon Harkey, Sr. He lived in Dubois, Wyoming for part of his childhood, and then moved to California in 1940. He was drafted by the Army in 1952, and became a cook. He served his country during the Korean War in the infantry, and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars.

Shannon married Idamae Shepard on April 21, 1956 and they had 6 beautiful children. He loved spending time with his family and loved taking them on family vacations when they were younger. They went on camping trips, visits to historical sites, and road trips across the country. He raised his children with love and encouragement, and was a constant presence in their lives. He adored his wife “Idie” and liked to sing to her while she was cooking dinner. “Tea for Two” was his favorite.

As the kids got older and had families of their own, he enjoyed visiting with everyone and gathering around the dinner table drinking coffee, telling stories, and quizzing them on facts and statistics. He loved his children and their significant others, and treated them as if they were his own and they returned that love. He loved visiting with all of his family, including his brothers and sisters, and his nieces and nephews, but he especially loved his grandkids. He loved sitting down and talking to them about their futures, and telling them stories about his past. He was loved and respected by all who knew him.

His funeral will be held April 28, 2014 at 11:00 in the morning at Arlington Mortuary, at 9645 Magnolia Avenue, Riverside, California, and will be followed by a graveside service at the Riverside National Cemetary, where he will be honored for his Life and Service to his Country.
