LaVerne LeRoy Bailey, 79, of St. Louis, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006, at Schnepp Health Care Center in St. Louis.

LaVerne was born in Midland County on May 21, 1927, to George Nelson and Gertrude Bell (Quidort) Bailey. He resided most of his life in the St. Louis area. LaVerne graduated from St. Louis High School with the class of 1946. LaVerne married Namah Stanton on Oct. 20, 1951, in Ithaca. She died on May 2, 1992. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired from the Dow Chemical Co. in 1986. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer. He was a member of the St. Louis First United Methodist Church.

LaVerne is survived by his three children, George Bailey and fiancee Gail English of Lansing, Larry Bailey of Midland, and Ellen and Robert Phelps of Golden, Colo.; two grandchildren, Nolan and Christine Bailey of Denver, Colo., and Jorgi Bailey of Lansing; step-granddaughter, Jefti VanValkenburg; three step-great-grandchildren, Michael, Alexandria, and Kaleb Peters; and three sisters, Helen and James Humphrey of Olympia, Wash., Florine and Darrell "Buzz" Brown of St. Louis, and Nancy Bailey of Lagrange, Ind. He was preceded by his parents; wife; three brothers, Orlo "Burrel", Loyal, and Dale; and one sister, Ilah.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 23, 2006, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Lillian French officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service from 10 to 11 a.m. Memorial service will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Louis Chapel, St. Louis.
