Daughter of Alva Parks Brown and his ex-wife, Martha Jane Ennis. After Alva and Martha divorced, Alva went to Indiana, where he married Louisa Thoman, then went to Michigan, where he died. Martha took Bertha and her siblings from Ohio to Arkansas, where Bertha met and married William Henry Boyd, a railroad worker. They eventually moved to Arizona and California.
