Theory 1: Sarah Jane Thornton is the daughter of Milton Owen Thornton and Judith Ann Luttrell (the daughter of Shelton Luttrell and Sarah Ann Bryant) born 22 Jul 1858 and her mother died giving birth to her. They also had a son, William Shelton Thornton born 17 Jan 1851 who was seven when his mother died. Milton took the boy to live with his grandparents (Judith's parents) in Schuyler County, Illinois after Judith's death but kept the newborn infant girl. He then married (2) Elizabeth Elender Floyd on 8 Jan 1860. The boy stayed in Illinois.
Theory 2: Sarah Jane was the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Elender Floyd and when she married Milton Owen Thornton on 8 Jan 1860, she gave her 1-1/2 year old daughter the Thornton name. This accounts for why Floyd is listed as her mother on her death certificate. Milton Owen's bible record of his own birth and that of his wives and children, list each of his children as the son/dau. of M O Thornton and Elizabeth Thornton his wife except for Sarah Jane Thornton whom he records as, "Sarah Jane the daughter of Elisabeth Elender Thornton was born July the 22, 1858."
So is Sarah Jane the daughter of Milton Owen Thornton or someone else? Her mother is definitely listed as Elizabeth Elender Thornton. I suspect Sarah is the daughter of an unmarried Elizabeth Elender Floyd and her father is unknown.

Elizabeth was not the mother of Sarah Jane. Judith Luttrell was her mother who died after giving birth to Sarah Jane.
