Leak Ayres, the man who rose from a Gatesville bank's errand boy-clerk to a long and distinguished career as its successors' president died at 7 pm Friday at the Coryell Memorial Hospital.
The 75 year old National Bank of Gatesville president suffered a near-fatal paralytic stroke while at work March 17, 1948, and was never able to resume his banking duties. His service to three Gatesville banks covered a span of nearly 60 years.
Final rites, conducted by Rev. J.W. Sprinkle, were held at the First Methodist Church at 3:30 pm Sunday. Burial was in the City Cemetery, with Scott's in charge and Andrew Kendrick, Dawson Cooper, Bob Ward, V.W. Straw, Cam McGilvray and Bailey Curry serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were the directors of the National Bank and the members of the Board of Stewards of the Methodist Church.

The son of W.L. Ayres, pioneer Gatesville merchant, Mr. Ayres was recognized as an outstanding leader in the business and church life of this community. Born in Gardner, Tennessee, July 25 1873 he came to Gatesville with his parents in 1883 and seven years later-at the age of 17-went to work for the old Citizens National Bank. It was located at the corner of Main and 7th streets where the National Bank now stands, and it was at this same spot that Mr. Ayres spent his entire career.
In 1901 he was made assistant cashier and in 1919 cashier. In August, 1921, he was elected president of what had then become the First National Bank to succeed the late Dr. J.R. Raby.
In 1938, when the First National and the Gatesville National Banks Consolidated to form the present National Bank of Gatesville, he was elected president of the new bank.
Held Church Offices
Mr. Ayres was a leading figure in Texas Methodism, and served the local church for many terms as Sunday School superintendent and chairman of the Board of Stewards. In addition, he held offices in the Central Texas Conference, and was often a delegate from this section to state and national Methodist conferences.
He was married to Miss Myrtle B. Buckley February 11, 1986, and she survives him. Other survivors are one son, Dr. W.L. Ayres of Lafayette Indiana; two daughters, Mrs. R.R. Anderson of Gatesville and Miss Dorothy Ayres of Austin; five grandchildren; and one brother, Dr. J.C. Ayres of Memphis.
