"Mother Kittie"
I have a small ceramic bullion cup that my grandma said Kitty last drank out of. Basically Kitty died from complications of childbirth to her youngest son, George Garfield Martin. He was born Dec 31st 1881, and she died early in January of 1882.
That heirloom was passed down from Kitty's husband John Martin, to daughter Jessie Bell (Martin) Click, to granddaughter Jessie Dorothy (Click) Coltran to great grand daughter Marguerite Pati Ann (Coltran) Cannon to great great grand son (me) Nick Cannon.
Another heirloom I have is a little bible book carved from a tree from Lookout Mountain, Tennessee by her brother Frank J Hawkins who was in that battle with the Union soldiers from Michigan. She was 6 years old when he carved it.
Also note that Kitty's full size photo/portrait used to be long to Jessie Bell (Martin) Click and her daughter Jessie Dorothy Click, but in a family feud a relative took it from Jessie Bell's house in Plains while she wasn't home -- without her permission. It was taken by Kitty Helen Click who felt it belonged to her since Kittie (Hawkins) Martin was her namesake. There was no robbery as others had seen her in town, and no other significant items were missing from the house. We have no idea what ever happened to that photo/portrait. I hope that it ended up with another family member, and that some day it will surface.
Note that Kitty & Jay (her first son who died of lye poisoning when he was a year old), are buried together. Grandma told me that she was originally buried in Abbyville as was Jay. Since her parents (Julius Jay Hawkins and Sarah Bell [Davis] Hawkins) were buried in Partridge, they had Kitty and Jay's remains moved to Partridge. All they could use to determine her remains were that she was buried with shoes that had shoe buckle one each shoe. That is how they identified the remains.
