Mrs. Clara Balk, Former Teacher, Dies in Hospital
Mrs. Clara Balk, librarian at Washington Junior High School and former teacher, died this morning in St. Anthony's Hospital following a cerebral hemorrhage suffered 13 days ago at the hospital. Mrs. Balk had resided at 2604 21st Ave., Rock Island.
Funeral services will be held 1:30 Wednesday afternoon in the Wheelan Funeral Home. The Rev. Arthur T. Clark, pastor emeritus of the South Park Presbyterian Church, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Robert O. Williams, present pastor of the church. Burial will be in Rock Island Memorial Park Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home tomorrow. Memorial donations may be made to the Rock Island County Mental Health Society.
The former Clara Irene Buell was born on Oct. 24, 1899, in Malone, N.Y., a daughter of Herbert W. and Sarah Rhoades Buell. As a child she moved to Iowa with her family. She was graduated with honors from the John Fletcher Academy, University Park, Iowa, in 1918 and from the John Fletcher College in 1922. She served as secretary to the president of the college for several years, and later did graduate study at the University of Iowa and at Western Illinois University, Macomb.
She was married to Leslie W. Balk in University Park on May 1, 1926. The couple came to Rock Island in 1945. The widower is a science teacher at Central Junior High School, Rock Island. A son, Alfred of Evanston, now a freelance writer, was formerly employed on the news staff of the Argus.
Mrs. Balk had been a school teacher for 25 years. She had taught at Rock Island High School, Franklin Junior High School, and served as a substitute teacher in Moline schools. She also had served as head of the cataloguing department of the Rock Island Public Library for two years. In addition, she had held teaching posts in Batavia and Muscatine, Iowa, and Mission and Colome, S.D.
She attended South Park Presbyterian Church, Rock Island.
She was a member of the Illinois Educational Association, the National Educational Association, the Illinois Librarians Association, and the Rock Island Educational Association.
Surviving in addition to the son, are the widower; a daughter, Mrs. Virginia Pickering, Los Angeles, Calif.; a brother, Leslie, Council Bluffs, Iowa, formerly of Moline; and two grandchildren.
Three brothers and five sisters preceded Mrs. Balk in death.
