THE BUTLER HERALD
Butler, Ga., Tuesday, May 5,1896
The Death Roll
At his home in Butler at eight o'clock a.m., on Monday, May the 4th, 1896, after a long but patient illness occurred the death of Mr. Henry Peed, (better known as Uncle Henry Peed). Mr. Peed was born in Pearce county, North Carolina, according to the best recollection of his family in 1807. When a boy of about 16 or 18 years of age he came to Lincoln county, Ga., where he remained several years when he moved to Talbot county, where he lived many years and married Miss Charlotte Lumpkin, Oct. 19th 1833, who was a sister of Dickerson Lumpkin, deceased. This union proved a divine blessing and to them were born five children, two of whom together with a Christian mother many years go entered the pearly gates to await the coming of a sainted father. Three still survive who are pressing toward the Kingdom-they are Messrs. D.J. and A.B. Peed and Mrs. Oliver Trussell. In early life Mr. Peed joined the Methodist church and lived a consistent Christian life to the day of his death. In May 1879 he married Miss Nancy Gunn, of Chattahoochee county, who still survives him, who as a wife has proven true and faithful. Nothing has ever been left undone to comfort her husband and no sacrifice too great for her to make in sickness or in health that would give relief or pleasure to him she loved. For 31 years Mr. Peed has been a citizen of Butter, who has held positions of honor and trust and was for many years one of the most reliable merchants of this place. He was an old time Methodist-a man of but little education but whose wise council was often appealed to in matters of business importance. He was a Mason true and tried, a kind husband and father, a good citizen and neighbor and as the candle of life without a flicker gently passed away his spirit returned to the God who gave it. How happy must be the exchange. Besides a devoted wife and three children he leaves many friends and relatives to mourn their loss. The funeral service will take place today at JO o'clock, and his remains will be interred in the cemetery near the Methodist church with Masonic honors. May the sod rest lightly over his grave.
