Colen N. Benfield Obituary:

BENFIELD, Colen N., of Estero, Fla., died at his home, surrounded by his loving family October 4, 2007, after a valiant four year battle with cancer. Colen was born October 7, 1929, in Salisbury, N.C., where he lived until joining the Joie Chitwood Thrill Show as a stunt car driver at a young age. For the next 12 years, he toured the United States and Canada with the Joie Chitwood Thrill Show, Hollywood Hell Drivers and Canadian Dare Devils. He took a two year break to serve in the U.S. Army. Colen settled in Tampa, in the early 1960s where he became a respected business owner until his retirement in 1995, at which time he moved to North Carolina. Leaving North Carolina, he moved to Estero, Fla. in 2002. Even though he was a workaholic, Colen found time to earn his pilot' s license, found time to be a member of the Egypt Temple Shrine Motorcycle Unit, and he found time for boating. He was a founding member of the Old Tampa Bay Boating Association. One of his greatest joys was filling "Mighty Ben" with friends and heading out into Tampa Bay. After a long and full life, Colen was often heard to say "I wish I could do it all over again, exactly the same way." In addition to his beloved wife, Elaine, Colen is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Denyse Ruble and Mike of Tampa, Cathy Benton and Greg of Sophia, N.C., Sonya Ridge and Keith of Estero, Fla.; four grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, George Benfield of Zephyrhills, Fla.; sister, Janie Williams of Salisbury, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. Understandably, many of Colen' s friends would like to attend services to have the opportunity to say goodbye. However, the family is honoring Colen' s wishes and instructions that no services be conducted.
