Barbara Ellen Wofford

Barbara Ellen Wofford, beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grand mother, has departed this world. Born July 24, 1927, in Springfield, Missouri, she grew up knowing the hardship and poverty that the vast majority of Americans experienced during the Great Depression. Her spirit was always strong and she was a stranger to self-pity.
As a teenager, she worked in a wartime plant sewing uniforms for the war effort. In 1944, at the age of 17, she married a 24 year old, decorated Army soldier, on leave from the war, Frank Wofford. Frank had already known 3 years of combat from the Pacific to Europe. Barbara had grown-up knowing the Wofford family and in Frank found the love of her life. She could remember the exact number of weeks, days and hours they were together before he returned to Europe and the war.
Afterwards, they would start a family beginning with Patricia, followed by Frank, Mary and James. Two more wars, Korea and Vietnam, would part them for a time. Barbara, raising their children and managing a household alone, was making her own sacrifice for the country. In 1960, after moving back and forth between Springfield and Fort Knox, Barbara and Frank settled in Austin, Texas which would be their home for the rest of their lives. Frank would serve with the Berlin Brigade and serve a tour in Vietnam. For several years he would be an instructor in the ROTC program at the University of Texas.
On March 14, 1975, Barbara was parted from the love of her life. Frank left this world, Command Sergeant Major, 1st Cavalry Division, U.S. Army, A warrior for 37 years. Barbara now soldiered on alone.
The family made Congress Avenue Baptist Church their church home shortly after moving to Austin and Barbara remained a member until her death. Barbara filled her later life with travel and work for her Lord. She was at the church every time the doors opened. She worked in the church kitchen, laundered and ironed the baptismal gowns, helped during vacation Bible school, taught Sunday school and visited the homebound sharing the Good News with those who could not visit the Lord's House. She filled her house with her excellent water color and oil paintings, along with the ceramics she cast and painted. She also filled her house with the children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren she loved so much. She faced old age and illness with dignity and a quiet courage. Barbara also faced these with humor. She remarked about her fading memory that, "if she had a bad day at least she would not remember it the next day." She went to the eternal peace and love of her Lord and Savior on April 10, 2014.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at Harrell Funeral Home, 4435 Frontier Trail, Austin, Texas.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, April 17, 2014, at Harrell Funeral Home, Austin, Texas. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas.
