Mary Dillard Cox was born Mary Dillard to parents Thomas Dillard and Ruth Goad about 1770 in the state of Virginia. She married William Cox (COCKS) about 1799 in Virginia.
They lived in Virginia for some time with several of their children, before settling in White County, TN. After William's death in 1814, Mary sold her land in TN and with four teenage sons, set out for Gasconade County, Missouri. Mary died about 1849, and according to the terms of her will, her "colored man", Barry was to be set free.
She also left the inheritance intended to be her daughters to her granddaughter, since her daughter died giving birth to the child.
