Red Hook, NY - John L. Menti Jr., 76 years old, of Red Hook, NY, died suddenly Tuesday April 8th at Northern Dutchess Hospital, after a long illness. He was the son of John L. Menti Sr. and Eunice (Hotaling) Menti.

John was born in Poughkeepsie, NY on August 2nd, 1937.

He grew up in Pine Plains, NY, graduating from Pine Plains School where he played in the marching band, was captain of the football team and awarded several medals from the New York State Music Association. He also played bass in a dance band. A graduate of Dutchess Community College also.

After graduation, he joined the Army and was accepted into the U.S.M.A. band where he served for four years. On October 4th, 1958 at St. Anthony Church in Pine Plains, he married Barbara Ann Holland who survives at home.

John's career was in sales for 42 years working for different companies, such as Dairylea, Entenmann's and finally retiring from Drake Bakeries in 2002.

While his children were young, he was active in Indian Guides, the Webalos section of the Boy Scouts and managed a minor league baseball team. As a communicant of the Church of Good Shepherd in Rhinebeck, NY, he served as usher for many years. John and his wife Barbara enjoyed their farm house, collecting antiques and travelling. John had an extensive collection of John Deere memorabilia. He also loved spending time at the Jersey Shore with his family.

In addition to his wife Barbara Ann of fifty five years, he is survived by his children John L. Menti III, Edward W. Menti and his wife Jeanne Harris and Nadine E. Van Wagner and her companion Tom Palatucci, grandchild Ashely L. Van Wagner and her fiancé Dylan J. Lamadore, step grandchildren Julie & Kristen Harris and the joy of his life great grandson Fox J. Lamadore.

He was previously deceased by his grandson Dillon J. Van Wagner, his sister-in-law Patricia McPhilliamy and nephew and godson James E. McPhillamy.

Calling hours are Sunday, April 13th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM, at the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51 W. Market St. Rhinebeck, NY.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, 11 AM, at the Good Shepherd Church, 3 Mulberry St. Rhinebeck, NY.

Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Rhinecliff.
