John Noren
March 6, 1946 - April 5, 2014

John William Noren, 68, of Hutto, died at home Saturday, April 5, 2014.

He is survived by wife Christy Dahl Noren; children Jenny Noren of Pflugerville, Christopher (wife Beth) of Hutto, and Rebecca Berckenhoff (husband Michael) of Pearland; two granddaughters, Kayla and Kallie Noren, and a grandson on the way (John Ryder Berckenhoff); brother Thomas J. Noren (wife Cynthia) of Hutto.

He was preceded in death by parents Tom O. and Norma B. Noren of Hutto.

Born to a farm family in Round Rock, John knew his purpose in life from the moment he got his hands in the dirt and his feet on the ground. He learned to survive the tough times and made the necessary commitments to stay in the business and grow. At 16, when his father died, he went before a judge to be declared an adult. He worked hard to keep the family farm intact and to earn funds to purchase the needed equipment to support his calling. He worked as a mechanic, began custom spraying and stripping cotton, baled hay, combined grain, and worked in the cotton gin, in addition to his own daily agenda.

He was fortunate that folks realized his potential and drive, and offered him opportunities from which he grew into the lifetime profession he loved. Local bankers were inspired by his hard work ethic and reached out to invest in him. With only $34 in his pocket and a handshake with his banker he began his career. He worked hard at it with perseverance and faith until the end, always striving to do the best that he could.

He was deeply involved in every aspect of the farm lifestyle. John served for years on the Board of Directors of the Hutto Grain Co-op. He worked closely with county entomologists and local agronomists to be sure of the best techniques and products for top production of the cotton, milo, and corn he raised. Over the years, he grew many test plots to help ensure the best quality and production of crops. In 1978, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce honored John with their Outstanding Agriculturalist Award. In 1992, the Hutto Chamber of Commerce recognized John and Christy as Agriculturalist of the Year.

John always enjoyed the challenge of operating, maintaining, and repairing equipment, problem solving, and making improvements along the way. When working in the field, he often paused at the end of the rows to breathe a "Thank you Lord," to the One who made it possible for him to always be where he could see and be a part of the constant renewal of life, and the beauty and wonders of the earth and sky.

John found his beloved wife and supportive farming partner of over 40 years on a neighboring farm. They married on June 16, 1973. The children gained hands-on education and experience on the farm. His son carries on his legacy, continuing and expanding the family farm. While farm work is endless, John always enjoyed family gatherings, talking with friends, taking his family to the Gulf Coast for a brief break when time allowed, and old tractors.

John was a great conversationalist and his sense of humor followed him wherever he went. He found kinship with everyone he met, whether through blood or marriage, occupation, or background. He was always ready to lend a hand to someone in need. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

The family will receive friends 6-8 PM, Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at Condra Funeral in Taylor. Services will be held at 2PM, Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Condra Funeral Home, with Pastor Marcus Bigott officiating. Graveside services and burial will follow at Hutto Lutheran Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Dahl, Robert Eno, Larry Leschber, Rick Kruger, Morris Noren, and Larry Svehlak. Special music by Cheryl Kruger.
