At age 16 she was living with her Aunt Ella Gracey Drown in New Orleans and was going to school. She became a teacher and returned to East Point, Louisiana. Her father was ill and she kept books for him while teaching full time and was able to pay the taxes on their plantation. Norman McLeod always gave her credit or saving the place. She must have paid the taxes between 1891 and 1895,

She died of kidney failure.
