John Lawton, for forty years a resident of this community, passed away about 1:30 Tuesday morning at the home of his son, John J. Lawton, in this city from heart trouble. News of his death came as a distinct shock to the citizens of Hawarden and to his wide circle of friends in this community.
He had been troubled with a heart affliction for some time and during the last few weeks this had been aggravated with occasional attacks of indigestion. It had not prevented him from being about town as usual, however, and he was down town Monday afternoon, going home at supper time.
During the evening he was seized with an attack of indigestion and as usual this affected his heart. A physician was summoned and some relief was obtained and it was thought that he was in shape to pass a comfortable night.
His daughter-in-law decided to remain up with him for awhile, however, in spite of his protests that she should retire. About 1 o'clock she laid down on a couch and dropped off to sleep. She woke up thirty minutes later and upon, going to his bed found that he was dead. No sound had been made and it was evident that death had come upon him peacefully.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 this afternoon at the Associated Church, with Rev. Edwin Booth in charge and interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery.
John Lawton was born in Jo Daviess county, IL., near Hanover, Aug. 6, 1859, so was past 66 years of age. He grew to manhood on his father's farm in Illinois and on Jan. 31, 1884, was united in marriage with Ida Elizabeth Binns.
Three children wew born to this union, John Jospeh, Mark Mrlvin, and Esie Marie. Elsie died at the age of 9 years and Mrs. Lawton preceded her husband in death nearly four years ago. The son, John J., resides with his family in Hawarden, while the daughter, Mrs. Geo. C. Coates, lives with her family at Hazel Green, Wis. Mrs. Coates arrived Wednesday to attend the funeral. He is also survived by his aged mother, Mrs. J.J. Lawton of Elizabeth, Ill., now past 84 years of age, and four sisters, Mrs. Wm. Jewell and Miss Alice Lawton of Elizabeth, Ill., Mrs. A.N. Smith of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Mrs. W.O. Rutherford of Marshalltown, Iowa.
All were in attendance at the funeral except his mother. Mr. Smith and Mr. Rutherford were also here for the funeral.
John Lawton and family came to Sioux county in 1886 and made their home on a farm near Hawarden and in town ever since, so that most of the years of his mature manhood were spent in this community. His home was always one that radiated hospitality and good cheer and it is not surprising that he acquired many lasting friendships for he wias fair and square in all his dealings and his neighbors and those who knew him best were his staunchest friends. Many people outside the immediate family circle will deeply mourn the passing of "Jack" Lawton.
