Funeral services for Kenneth Berndt, 81, of Garretson, were Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Garretson. Interment was in the Danzig Baptist Cemetery at Avon.

Mr. Berndt died Wednesday, Feb. 9 at his home.

He was born Sept. 29, 1923 on the family farm near Avon to Tefel and Martha (Radack) Berndt. He grew up in the Avon area and attended country school near there. After his education he farmed with his father and then moved to Clear Lake where he farmed until 1983. He then moved to Missouri and in 1992 moved to Garretson.

He married Wilba Hankins on Oct. 20, 1950 in Cloverdale, Iowa. She died in 1977. He then married Darlene Hoffman on Nov. 1, 1980 in Clear Lake.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene of Garretson; three sons, Kurtis (Candace) Berndt of Sioux Falls, Timothy (Faye) Berndt of Groton, and Thomas (Marti) Berndt of Brandon; a daughter, Rebecca Hartsuiker of Brandon; a stepson, Douglas (Jane) Hoffman of Redwood, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Elizabeth Nehring of Horicon, Wis.; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilba, parents, a sister, twin sons, and a great-grandson.

Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson, was in charge of arrangements.
