Mr. Johnston managed a Hill Grocery Store and established Johnston grocery stores in Ensley and Graymont. He worked as a real estate agent with Belview Realty until his retirement at age 93. He was a member of Ensley Highlands Methodist Church and served as Secretary of the Ensley Kiwanis Club.
Survivors: wife of 72 years, daughter, son, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fannie Atchinson Johnston and Thomas Avery Johnston; his sisters, Oma Bearden, Lena Poe, Louise Chambers; and his brothers, Clarence and Draper Johnston.
Service will be held Saturday, October 11, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at Ridout's Elmwood Chapel with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bluff Park United Methodist Church and New Beacon Hospice.
