STANDISH, Hiram was born May 26, 1809 in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont the son of Lemuel Miles Standish and Ruth Meacham. He married Eveline Stanley Farrar January 11, 1838 and they were the parents of four children, Julia Adelaide (Walter W. Shepard), Emma Caroline (Samuel Adolphus Barr), Adelia Evelina and Edward Hiram. He came to Illinois in the 1830’s, and was one of the first school teachers in the new Naper Settlement. He served as DuPage County Treasurer in 1857 and 1858. He learned telegraphy at the age of 56 and became a station agent for the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad at Millersburg, Mercer County, Illinois. He was raised a Master Mason August 9, 1859. He died July 25, 1895 in Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska and was buried in the Columbus Cemetery.
