Alfred Darnell was born at Plano, Illinois, July 10, 1840, where he lived until the war broke out: he responded to the first call for volunteers and was chosen as the First Lieutenant of his company, but much of the time he served as captain. He was in the service of his country until the close of the war and was with Grant, Logan and Sherman and made the famous "March to the Sea." In March 1869 he was united in marriage with Miss Gertrude Agan, and to them were born four daughters and one son, all of whom are living and were present at the funeral services, Sunday, April 3, 1904, following the sudden death the previous Thursday night. The family came to Grand Junction in March of 1896, after six years' residence in Iowa. Comrade Darnell was a respected and most highly esteemed citizen and held in great respect by his Grand Army brethren, by whom he was laid to rest.
