Civil War: Company A, 1st California Infantry; Company A, 1st California Veteran Infantry.

John Hulburt van Order (also: Vanorder) was born at Ithaca, New York, in 1841, the son of M. I. van Order (1806, NY-bef. June 1853, IL). He was living with his father and step-mother, Cynthia* A. (maiden name unknown; 1808, NY-Jun. 15, 1881, IL), in Cook County, Illinois, in 1850 (1850 US Census). After John's father died about 1852, his step-mother married widower Darias B. Gage (1801, NY-1877, IL) in Lake County, Illinois, on June 8, 1853. Sometime about 1860 John relocated to California. During the Civil War he enlisted as private August 15, 1861, and was mustered into Company A, 1st California Infantry, August 24. He re-enlisted as a musician (fifer) at Fort Union, New Mexico, December 9, 1863. Effective December 1, 1864, his regiment was re-organized as 1st Battalion, 1st California Veteran Infantry. Private van Order was mustered out at Fort Union September 9, 1866. John remained in New Mexico where he married(?) (1) Lorenza (maiden name unknown; 1841, NM). He was living with her and their two children at Peralta, Valencia County, New Mexico, in 1870 (1870 US Census) and at Georgetown, Grant County, New Mexico, in 1881. John then went to Arizona where he met (2) Juana Varela y Flores. They were eventually married in Graham County on November 15, 1893. Juana (1863, MX-after 1910) was the daughter of (first name unknown) Varela and Magdalena Flores (1840, MX-after 1910). John filed for a Civil War veterans pension in Arizona March 23, 1892, and received application No. 1,100,894 (a certificate number was not issued). John died in Graham County in late 1897, just a few months after he recorded the patent for his Graham County homestead at Tucson on August 9, 1897 (1897 Homestead Patent; 1901 Probate Record). About 2 years after his death Juana applied for a Civil War Widow's pension on October 11, 1899, and received application No. 706,785 and certificate No. 520,202. A probate was filed on Juana’s behalf in 1901 and she was still living on their homestead in 1910 (1910 US Census).

* Not long after John's departure, Cynthia and Darias adopted Mary Jane (surname unknown; born 1861, IL). Cynthia left John and Mary each $50 in her will, filed at Antioch, Lake County, Illinois, signed June 5, 1881, shortly before her death on June 15 (Illinois Probate Records, Case No. 1675). John was then living at Georgetown, Grant County, New Mexico. Mary Jane Gage married Mr. Porter just before Cynthia's death.
