BARRE - Charles G. Allen Jr., 98, Barre's oldest citizen, died peacefully at home with his family on June 16, 2004.

His wife of 66 years, Gladys Howland Allen , died in 1995. His sister, Barbara Goldsmith Dorwood, died on June 16, 1990. Mr. Allen was born in Barre on September 30,1905, son of Charles G. Allen and Bessie Williams Allen, and lived here his entire life. He leaves a son, Charles G. Allen IV, and a daughter, Gladys Jean Allen, of Barre. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and two ex-step-great grandchildren. Mr. Allen is also survived by two nephews, Harold S. Goldsmith Jr. and Richard A. Goldsmith.

A graduate of Barre High School and Dartmouth College, Mr. Allen worked for the Chas. G. Allen Co. his entire career, serving for many years as Treasurer and General Manager. He was instrumental in guiding the company out of the Great Depression, through the devastating Flood and Hurricane of 1938, and the production demands of World War II. He was very proud of the Army-Navy ''E'' awards earned by the company for its contributions to the war effort.

With his wife, he spent many years traveling the world, with a special affinity for Africa and its wildlife. He became an accomplished Travelogue film-maker and lecturer. He donated all proceeds from his travel film lectures to the East African Wildlife Society. He enjoyed hunting and was an avid fly fisherman. He gave back more than he took by being involved with the stocking of hares and trout in this area.

Mr. Allen was a life-long member of the Barre Congregational Church, a member of the East African Wildlife Society and the Shop Brook Association. He was a trustee of Barre Savings Bank for many years.

A graveside service will be held at Glen Valley Cemetery, Valley Drive, Barre, on June 19, at 10 a.m. Mr. Allen requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Barre Visiting Nurse Association, Barre, MA 01005; or the Barre Congregational Church Steeple Fund, P.O. Box 946, Barre, MA 01005. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden, MA.
