Gustave was the son of Ferdinand Carl Miller and Caroline. He immigrated to the US on the ship Oder. The ship left Bremen, Germany and first sailed to Southampton, England before reaching the Port of New York on July 3, 1882. Gustave was 8 years old and traveled with his parents and two younger brothers. They first went to Boston, MA then to Arlington, MA and finally Melrose, MA. Gustave married Lona Ariel Sargent on Dec 25, 1898. They had 6 children: Lloyd, Lawerence, Lyndall, Verna, Leona, and Ronald.

On the 1900 census Gustave is listed as a wood engraver but later became a machine foreman at the United Shoe Factory in Beverly, MA.
