Wheeling Register reported his death stating he " was one of the oldest and best known citizens of the Island. He came to Wheeling in 1841 and was interested in the drug and glass business until the panic of 1873 swept over the country. He was married in 1851 to Nancy Robinson daughter of late S G. Robinson.
Since its organization in 1872, Mr. Tappan has been a consistent Republican leaving the Old Line Whigs. Besides his wife, he leaves children Samual J and Harry both of Findlay Ohio, and E. W. of Laton, Indiana who are engaged in the glass business, Elmer T of New York, Elizabeth M who teaches at the Madison School, Dora R local telephone manager and Stella H, George and Hattie who reside with their parents."
