Samuel Mayes first wife was Mary Scott of Piney Flats, Sullivan County, Tennessee (North Carolina then Territory South of the River Ohio). Her father was Colonel John Scott and mother Mary Hannah McCorkle. John Scott and Samuel Mayes met on the Revolutionary War battlefield, probably first at Musgrove's Mill in South Carolina. They became friends and visited each other frequently. Mary and Samuel Mayes were probably married at the New Bethel Presbyterian Church in Piney Flats. Samuel took his bride, and the Scott Family friend/slave Daddy Ben Scott, to South Carolina where Mary died probably giving birth to John Mary Scott Mayes. Samuel married Mary Frierson the next year 1797. Mary Scott was born in Piney Creek, Frederick County, Maryland before the Scott, Rheas, McCorkle, Alison, and other families removed wagon train to Sullivan County, North Carolina in 1778.
