His uncle, William Haverstock and his wife, Margaret, had no children and upon learning that Ulysses was to be named after General Grant offered a sheep from his flock if the parents would name him Ulysses William. When ready for his first suit of clothes, his sheep was sheared. "I can remember seeing my sheep washed in Davis Creek, preparatory to shearing. I suppose the wool was sold and goods bought for my suit. I remember how proud I was of a new suit, which I think Irene (sister) made for my first day of school" (Zanesville Indiana History, 1849-1976, by Melba McBride Edwards and Rosemary Kumfer, Edwin Peck, The Ossian Journal, 1976).
He had been Principal of the Delta Public Schools and an educator of recognized ability throughout the state. In 1919, they moved to Hawthorne, Nevada, where he inaugurated the use of audio-visual aids into the school system. After living at Angels Camp (CA.) and Stockton (CA.) in 1927, the family settled in San Francisco. In 1937, after 50 years in public education, they retired to the East Bay.
