Alta Louise Elming DeFreese, 92, died at 4:50 AM Sunday, April 21, 2002, in her Westminster Village residence. Born Dec. 5, in Wayne Township, Tippecanoe County, she graduated from West Point High School in 1928. Her first marriage was to George E. Julian on April 16, 1929; he preceded her in death. She then married Lee V. DeFreese on June 8, 1946, and he died April 7, 1980.
Mrs. DeFreese was a buyer for Montgomery Ward and J.C. Penney from 1947-1952. She farmed with her husband from 1952-1977, and was a Union Township Trustee from 1966-1970, when she retired. She was a member of Stidham United Methodist Church, and Union Township Home Economics Club. She enjoyed crocheting, word-search books, and Purdue University basketball.
Surviving are two daughters, Donna (Mrs. Charles) Gullion of Lafayette and Dorothy (Mrs. Ralph) Boes of West Lafayette; two sons, Robert E. (wife Brenda) Julian and Max E. (wife Barbara) Julian, both of Lafayette; two sisters, Mary A. Peake of West Lafayette and Charlene C. Pendleton of Romney; 8 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles O. and Clara L. Osterling Elming; one brother and two sisters.
