-Samuel Merrill (or Merrell) was born in New Jersey in 1758 (or 1757), married Catherine, daughter of Jacob Beam, and came to Canada with other Loyalists about 1790. He settled lots 14 and 15, Concession V, Clinton Township. He died in 1833, and he and his wife Catherine were buried in the Baptist Churchyard, Beamsville.

In memory of Samuel Merrell, who departed this life, February 4th 1835, aged 77 years, 10 months, and 11 days. This mortal frame no more shall be, by care and pains oppress'd. God's boundless love, hath me removed, to everlasting rest. (Stone is clear 1835 - church records 1833)
