John was the son of Abner and Mary Batt. He was married twice, first in 1870 to Mary E. Dawson, 1851-1893, daughter of Cyrus and Amelia Dawson of Morgan Co. WV. He and Mary lived in Shenandoah Co. Va. west of Strasburg on the Capon Grade. John was a miller. Mary died in 1893 and John married for the second time in 1898 in Hampshire Co. WV. to Margaret C. Sechrist, 1849-1913, daughter of Frederick and Elizabeth (Brill) Sechrist. Margaret owned a tract of land at Capon Springs in Hampshire Co. WV. where they lived and John became a truck farmer. Margaret died in 1913 and apparently John died before her between 1910 and 1913 because Margaret's brother, William M. Secrist was appointed administrator of her estate two years after her death. John was the father of one child by his first wife, Joseph Edward Batt, born Oct.31,1887 in Shenandoah Co. Va and died in Dec. 1968 in Baltimore, Md. where he lived and worked.
