Obituary

Lois Hawkins, 84, of 9th Ave. North, Pell City, departed to her reward on January 15, 2012 from complications of a long term illness at Brookwood Hospital in Birmingham. Mrs. Hawkins was born Wilma Lois Vester in Birmingham on May 24, 1927. Her father died when she was 1 year old. She was the youngest of five sisters who were raised by their mother Lula Vester. Mrs. Hawkins was preceded in death by a son Dewey Claude Hawkins, and husband of almost 60 years Claude Hubert Hawkins retired employee of the Birmingham News. She moved to the Pell City area with her husband Claude more that 35 years ago from Birmingham, and enjoyed the pleasures of living on the lake for many years. Lois was an active member of the New London Community Neighborhood Watch and for many years work every Saturday at the once famous Saturday Morning Neighborhood Watch Breakfast, which raised money for disadvantaged families throughout the area. She was a member of the Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Cropwell. She was a real life "Rosie The Riveter". In 1942 she faked her age and at only 15 traveled alone from Alabama to the Bremerton Ship Yards in Washington State to help build Victory ships for WWII. She later returned to Birmingham to work in an aircraft plant building WWII aircraft. She loved to travel and enjoyed many vacation trips with family and friends. She loved the ocean and the beach. She had hopes and plans for one last Great Adventure, she was very excited over the prospects of moving to Estill, SC, where she had met and developed a wonderful group of friends, but failing health kept her from this Adventure. Mrs. Hawkins departed leaving daughter, Billie Persall; son, Charles Hawkins (Pat); three grandchildren, Stephanie Morrison (Russ), Nancy Waytus (David) and Dewey Isbell (Angela); nine great grandchildren; one great great grandson and one great great grandchild due very soon. Lois was a loving and caring person who was loved by all who met her. She was a wonderful loving mother and wife. Gone from our presence, but alive in our minds and hearts, we will love and honor her for the rest of our lives. Funeral services were Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at 12 p.m. from Kilgroe Funeral Home, Pell City with burial in the Forest Crest Cemetery. Kilgroe Funeral Home in Pell City directed.
