Lake W. Stroup Sr.
In the tradition of national leaders like Sam Rayburn and Carl Albert, Lake W. Stroup Sr. was indeed "Mr. Democrat" in Cherokee County.
Outside his family, his community and his many friends, Mr. Lake was a devoted, dedicated, and in his words, dyed-in-the-wool Democrat.
"I don't always agree with the man we Democrats nominate," he told The Ledger in an interview some months ago, "but I do agree that the party of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry Truman is the party for the little man, especially in the South."
Mr. Lake loved this county in which he had spent his entire 84 years, prior to his death last Tuesday. He had a special place in his heart for politics and the combination of his love of county and his thirst for the political arena, led him into public service on a number of occasions.
He was retired from the Public Service Commission, was a former sheriff of Cherokee County, a former probate judge and a former member of the S. C. House of Representatives.
Mr. Lake was a member of Draytonville Baptist Church where he served as choir director for 25 years and also served many years as Sunday School superintendent.
His love for sacred and gospel songs led him into many communities all over this nation, especially his his younger years, to lead singings and to take part in the special music.
Lake Stroup Sr. was a name associated with Cherokee County over the many years of growth and development, and his contributions to the community were numerous and progressive.
The passing of such pillars of the community often leaves a void which is never filled.
The Ledger joins the family and many friends in mourning his passing, but realize that another fine voice has been added to the hosts which praise God with singing.
