Robert Blood (126941436)

Suggested edit: Hi there,

I've been working on Robert for a couple of decades now, and I'm on a quest to ferret out and try to correct all the incorrect information out there on him, which is a vast amount.
Year of Birth: Robert, according to his own testimony, was born in either 1625 or 1626. The 1628 year comes from a contemporary (but otherwise unrelated) Robert Blood who was born in nearby Rempstone in that year. Definitely not the same Robert Blood as that guy was buried there in 1690.
Place of Birth: You're absolutely right on Ruddington being most probable place of birth, and kudos for not falling for the "Puddington" trap. Here's the rundown on incorrect places of birth for Robert (and by extension probable brother Richard and certain brother John):
• Puddington, Nottinghamshire – This is by far the most common erroneous place of birth, but the problem is no such place exists or has ever existed.
• Puddington, Northamptonshire – No such place exists or has ever existed.
• Paddington, Northamptonshire – No such place exists or has ever existed.
• Ruddingham, Nottinghamshire – No such place exists or has ever existed.
• Puddington, Cheshire – It exists at least, but there is not one shred of evidence linking any of the early colonial Bloods to Cheshire. This is one to blame on Lemuel Shattuck, who appears to have made a lot of stuff up about the early Bloods.

Father: Definitely not James Blood. This one is the king of the errors that will not die. Problems: James didn't marry until well after Robert and John were born; James lived in Concord while these two alleged sons of his lived in Lynn while they were still children; James did not mention Robert or John in his will at all, which would have been unheard of at the time and possibly contrary to the law. The leading contender for their father right now is a Richard Blood, Senior of Ruddington who was active in the records from 1611 to 1639 (this guy: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Blood-224). He's not a smoking gun certainty, but the weight of circumstantial evidence that he's their father is getting pretty heavy.
Mother: Definitely not James' wife Ellen/Hellen. James and Ellen's only proven son was James, Jr. born in Nottingham in 1632. Robert's actual mother's name is unknown but she was likely of the Lakin family of Ruddington and a sister of William Lakin.

All the best,
Garry Blood
