Carl was the only one of six children born to Rudolph Carl Robert Kloepfer and Leonore A. Bofinger to reach adulthood. His father was a German immigrant who came to the United States in the summer of 1858. Carl's mother Leonore was the daughter of a preacher, born in Joliet, Illinois. His parents were married on 8 Jun 1875 in Plymouth by Leonore's father, Rev. Carl Bofinger.

Carl first appeared with his parents on the 1880 Census, living in Plymouth, Marshall County, Indiana. Carl's father Rudolph, aged 30, was in the retail dry goods business. His mother Leonore, aged 23, was home with 2-year-old Carl.

Fast forward twenty years to the 1900 Census. The family was still living in Plymouth. Rudolph, aged 50, was busy with his dry goods business. Lenore reported that she had had six children, but that only one had survived to that census. Indeed, son Carl, aged 22, was single, fresh out of college, and still at home with his parents. Also there was servant Rosa Laubengeiger.

A year after that census, Carl married Gertrude Orinda Thomson on 4 Feb 1901 in Essex, Ontario. They first lived in Missouri where daughter Leonore E.A. was born on 21 Oct 1903. A few years later they were in Kansas, where son Rudolph Carl was born on 4 Apr 1906.

By 1910, Carl had found a teaching job in Akron, Summit County, Ohio. That's where I found the four of them that year. Carl, aged 32, was a teacher in a public school. Gertrude reported that they had had two children and that both were still alive. Indeed, home with her were daughter Leonore, aged 6, and son Rudolph, aged 4. Also there was a roomer, 24-year-old machinest P.H. Kingston.

By 1917, Carl and Gertrude had again relocated, this time to Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., Minnesota. On his WWI draft card, Carl, aged 39, gave instructor for the school board of the city of Minneapolis as his occupation, and indicated that he was supporting a wife and two children. On the 1920 Census, they were at 3245 Emerson Dr. in Minneapolis. Carl, aged 42, was teaching public school. Gertrude, aged 30, was home with their two teenaged children--Leonore, aged 16, and Rudolph, aged 13.

On 29 Mar 1927, Carl's father Rudolph died at age 77. Carl gave up his teaching job and he and Gertrude moved the family to Logansport, Cass County, Indiana. They found a house on North St. near Carl's mother, and Carl took over his father's interest in The Golden Rule Department Store in Logansport, aka The Schmitt Kloepfer Co. They were there when the 1930 Census was taken. Carl was 52, Gertrude was 50. Their nest was empty.

Daughter Leonore first married James Edward Doran circa 1922 and had two daughters with him, one of them named Corradine, born in 1923. Leonore married for a second time on 18 Jun 1936, exchanging vows with Thomas Hannagan, with whom she had a daughter.

On 9 May 1928, son Rudolph married Helen Elizabeth Metzger, the daughter of William Metzger and Clara Eikenberry, in Cass County, Michigan. They would have two sons together.

When the 1940 Census was enumerated, Carl, aged 62, and Gertrude, aged 60, were still living in the home at 1194 North St. in Logansport. Carl was still managing the dry goods store. He gave that same information on his 1942 WWII draft registration.

On 4 Feb 1951, Carl and Gertrude celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. They would share over sixty one years of their lives together before death parted them, claiming Carl in January of 1963 when he was 85 years old. Gertrude lived another seven years before she was laid to rest at his side after her death in 1970.

Carl and Lenore's son Rudolph died in September of 1977 at age 71, and Leonore lived until aged 82, dying on 3 Oct 1985, four years before second husband Thomas Hannagan.
