Mae Jeanne "Jan" McDaniel PhD was born on 26 Aug 1927 in Claremont, Richland County, Illinois. She died on 25 Sep 2007 in Sun City, Arizona.

Jan lived in Clarement Township, Richland County, IL, until her family moved to Ohio when she was in High School. Jan attended Bowling Green State University in Ohio where she earned a BA in Liberal Arts with a Major in Psychology, and a BS degree in education triple majoring in Biology, English and Social Science. She earned her Masters degree at the University of Michigan in education, with a major in guidance and counseling and a PhD in Educational Psychology. Jan taught and counseled at the High School level and was a graduate level instructor in education at the University of Michigan. She specialized in developing drug education courses for teachers and treatment techniques for addicted adolescents. She received a postgraduate education in Cognitive Mapping, Values Clarification, Learning Strategies, Small Group Counseling and Drug Education; and more. On 7 June 1950, in Toledo, Ohio, Jan married Carlton Charles Flegle. Carlton and Jan moved to Michigan where their two children were born. On 11 Nov 1972, Jan married her second husband, Dr Allan Dean Dawson, who taught physical sciences in High School, and later worked as an instructional science course developer at Florida State University. No issue from this 2nd marriage.

She lived in Illinois, Bowling Green, Ohio and Dearborn, Michigan, her residence before moving to Sun City, Arizona in 1995. Jan received her BA in Liberal Arts, with a major in Psychology, and a BS in Education, with majors in Biology and English, from the Bowling Green State University in Ohio. She received a MA in Education and a PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Michigan. Additional training was received at Wayne State University, marygrove College, Mercy College, Henry Ford Community College, and Florida State University in such areas as Curriculum Development, Values Clarification, Group Potential, Sensitivity Training, Small Group Counseling, Drug Abuse Education and Treatment, Non-Verbal Communication, Cognitive Mapping, Alternative Learning Techniques, and Needs of Special Students, plus others. Jan taught biology, psychology, English, social studies and the natural sciences in the Dearborn, Michigan School System as well as in the College of Education at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. During her career, she was instrumental in developing a number of school and civic programs among which were the Independent Study Program for gifted and talented students; The Community Task Force to Combat Drug Abuse; Citywide Small Group Counseling Programs; and Counselor Training Workshops. She was active in working with addicted students and training others to work with them; developing gifted and talented students programs; curriculum development; and parent-teacher-student communication training. In addition to acting as a consultant for education projects, she spoke at area meetings and national conventions, and published numerous articles in professional journals. Among her hobbies were gardening and genealogy. Her first husband was Carlton C Flegle, with whom she had two children, Michael and Michelle. Her second husband was Dr Allen D Dawson of Dearborn, Michigan, who died in 1989. Surviving are a son, Michael H Flegle of Issaquah, Washington; a daughter, Michelle S Herrick of Red Wing, Minnesota; one grandson, Micah L Pittman of Mesa, Arizona; one granddaughter, Rachel L Herrick of Red Wing, Minnesota; and eight cousins. She requested there be no Memorial Service.
