Rev. Keyes had been a minister of numerous rural churches in the surrounding communities since 1918. At the time of his death, he was pastor of Lone Pine Baptist Church. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William H. Keyes and Nancy S. Walker Keyes; two brothers, Ivy Joshua Keyes and Jephtha Lafayette "Fate" Keyes; three sisters, Nancy E. Cockerham, Sallie A. Bruce, Jane Matilda Grayson; and one sibling who died in childhood before 1900.

He was survived by his wife, Amy Shelton Keyes; one daughter, Audie Keyes Larson of Rockford, CT; three sons, J. Floyd Keyes of Houston, TX, A.L. Keyes of Winnsboro, and Fred A. Keyes of Natchez, MS; three brothers, William Benjamin "Ben" Keyes of Winnfield, Howard Anslam Keyes of Fresno, CA, and Wiley Morris Keyes of Winnsboro; and 15 grandchildren.
