Barney Martin Hardy Jr. of Dallas TX, was born September 7, 1923. He took up permanent residence at his new address which has been prepared especially for him, at noon on February 23, 2014, surrounded by his family. He was 90 years old. Barney was beloved by many and rarely met a stranger. Last September his children gave him a wonderful 90th birthday party, complete with a bowtie birthday cake! He always wore a bow tie for many years. It was a lovely celebration of a life well lived. He will be missed. Barney was born in Dallas TX to Sammie and Barney Hardy Sr. and lived here most of his life. He began attending Scofield Memorial Church in 1936 and was a lifelong member, having served there many years on the Board of Deacons and Board of Elders and many other capacities. After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1941, he attended Wheaton College in Chicago. But in January 1943, he was called into service by his country. He trained in the US and then was transferred to England and France. He served for 3 years before being released. After the war, he worked at Dixie Trailways where he met Alice Jo Klapp. They married in Nov 1947. In 1952 he started working at Magnolia Petroleum Co which later changed to Mobil Oil Corp. He was involved in the infancy of Data Programming. In 1963, Barney received his BBA from SMU. He said it took him 13 years to complete his studies because most of it was done in the evenings after work. In June 1975, Jo was diagnosed with lung cancer and died 3 months later at age 50. This was a very difficult time in his life. Although Marianne and Maureen were grown, Martin was only 13 years old and he struggled with the idea of raising a young boy without his Mother. In 1979, after 28 years of service, Barney retired from Mobil. His retirement party was one of the largest attended and he was very honored by that. After that, he joined the National Association of Enrolled Agents and began his tax business, which he continued for a number of years. In 1979, Barney was introduced to Hazel Nell Kemp by a friend and in October 1979, they were married until Hazel died in 2004. In 2012, Barney married Peggy Conard who had cared for Hazel while she was ill and then cared for Barney until his death. He is survived by his wife Peggy, daughter Marianne Hylkema, daughter Maureen Creacy and husband Jerry Creacy, son Martin Hardy and wife Lanna. He is also survived by his grandchildren Josh Hylkema and wife Alecia, Amy Jo Hylkema, Brent Creacy and wife Hannah, Scott Creacy, Maggie Hardy, Riley Hardy and Alice Hardy and his great grandchildren Michael Hylkema, Madison Hylkema, Sydney Hylkema, Harper Creacy and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 28 years Alice Jo Hardy, wife of 25 years Hazel Hardy, his parents, his sister Mary Bess Elmore and his step-father Reuben Pickard. Visitation will be Tuesday Feb 25 at Ed C. Smith Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held there on Wednesday Feb 26 at 2:00 pm. A private burial will be held at Grove Hill Memorial Park.
