Records show birth in North Carolina or Tennessee. He shows up in Tennessee at age 5. He was married twice. He was a farmer or farm laborer. He was the father of three daughters by his first marriage, Mary "Mamie" and Fanny W. and an unnamed daughter as shown in the 1880 census; and the father of two daughters by his second marriage, Maud and Claudia.

His first marriage was to Elizabeth Lyons. They divorced prior to 1890 and he then married Sarah Elizabeth Lawrence, a widow in Mills County, Texas in 1891.

After 1910 he and Sarah Elizabeth were separated and he lived with a granddaughter, Clara Rucker (unknown) for short period in Dublin and then ended up in Ranger during the oil boom.

His death certificate shows that he was a pauper and died from paralysis and was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Ranger. There is no marker or headstone.
