Gardell Franklin Gay was the son of Charles F. Gay (born circa 1830 in Tennessee) and Rebecca A. Gay (born circa 1841 in Iowa.) His siblings seem to have been (or to have included) the following; the first four were born in Oregon and the younger ones in Washington.)
* Charles C. Gay (born circa 1859,)
* Florence G. Gay (born circa 1861,)
* Horace W. Gay (1863-1937,)
* Daisy A. Gay (born circa 1868,)
* Rebecca A. Gay (born circa 1883,) and
* Demoris E. Gay (1877-1927.)

Gardell married Grace Lee Gay circa 1902, the first marriage for both. As of the 1910 US Census, Grace had given birth to three children, one of whom (two year-old daughter Verna H.) was still living. The 1920 Census shows the couple with two more children: Fern (born circa 1911) and Dale (born circa 1913.) Gardell and Grace divorced sometime between the 1920 and 1940 US Census enumerations.

Additional information was taken from US Census enumerations for 1870 (parents and siblings in Springfield, Lane, Oregon,) 1880 (with mother and siblings in Hillsboro, Washington, Oregon,) 1910 (with wife and daughter in Spokane, Spokane, Washington,) 1920 (with spouse and children in Seattle, King, Washington,) and 1940 (alone in West Spokane, Spokane, Washington;) 1887 Washington State and Territorial Census (with parents and siblings in Walla Walla, Washington;) 1918 World War I draft registration card; Washington State Death Records (FHL Film Number 2033086, Reference ID 5239;) and death notice added to memorial for brother Horace.
