Civil War Union Army Officer. He was mustered in as a Corporal in Company H, 9th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on October 31, 1861. He was promoted to Sergeant on February 1, 1862, 1st Sergeant on March 1, 1862, and 1st Lieutenant on December 23, 1862.

When Captain Joseph B. Lawrence, commander of Company H, died of wounds recieved at the May 1864 Battle of Drury's Bluff, Virginia, Edward S. Pullen was promoted on September 9, 1864 to Captain and assumed commander of the Company. He then led Company H through the end of the war, and was honorably mustered out on July 12, 1865.

He filed for a US Army Invalid Veteran Pension on February 24, 1879 (Application #268875, Certificate #165260).

On January 12, 1892 his wife, Clementina K. Pullen, filed for a US Army Widow's Pension (Application #537433, Certificate #343048).
