Rafael was preceded in death by his parents, Gonzalo and Eloisa Benavídez, his wife, Sabina Gonzáles Benavídez, two brothers, Fidel Benavídez and Casey Benavídez and a nephew, David Aragón.
Rafael is survived by four daughters, Angie Valdéz and her husband, Joe of Garden City, KS, Mary Ann Aragón of Pecos, NM, Lorraine Romero and her husband, Adolfo and Theresa Benavídez and her companion, Ray Romero all of Las Vegas, NM, one son, Ralph Benavídez and his companion, Corine Valdéz of Garden City, KS, one brother, Teo Benavídez of Las Vegas, NM, five sisters, Rose Salazar and her husband, Johnny of Las Vegas, NM, Helen Vargas and her husband, Geraldo of Romeroville, NM, Clorinda Romero and her husband, Rosendo, Lena Flores and her husband, Paul and Jessie Archuleta all of Las Vegas, NM, 13 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
Rafael was born in Sheridan, NM on May 11, 1930.
Rafael worked for the AT & SF Railway Company laying track.
Rafael's hobbies were fishing, hunting, camping and playing with grandkids and his harmonica. Rafael loved to dance and spent time at the Senior Citizens Center and took long walks.
A visitation will be held on Monday, March 24, 2014 from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at St. Francis Chapel at Gonzáles Funerals & Cremations, 2315 Hot Springs Blvd. At rosary will be recited in the chapel at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. The interment will follow in Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Cemetery in Tecolote, NM. Serving as casket bearers will be Manuel Valdéz, J. R. Aragón, Orlando Romero, Bryan Romero, Ismael Gonzáles and Ralph Benavídez Jr.
