Mark Herod passed on to greater glory on March 17, 2014. He was born on November 26, 1925 in Thornton, Texas to a sharecopping family consisting of his mother: Mattie Lou Hash, father: Pinkney Monroe Herod and five siblings. During his childhood, his family moved to Portland, Oregon At 18, he was drafted into the Army where he became an infantryman, a machine gunner and a mechanic. He left the Army after serving 2 years and came back home to Portland. He enjoyed roller skating at Oaks Park and met his first wife, Virginia Stearns, there. They married in 1947 and were married for 56 years when Virginia passed on in 2004. He then married Grace Bowen in 2005 and had been married for eight years at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Grace Bowen-Herod, a daughter, Susan Freeman, three step-children, Gary Bowen, Karen Schmidt and AlexSandra McNabb, thirteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mark was always a Texan at heart throughout his life. He worked at PGE for forty years as a mechanic and painter. He loved working on cars in his spare time and was a gifted mechanic. He enjoyed spending time with is family on vacations and in everyday activities. He was also a woodworker, crafting items with love and care for his loved ones. He was a very gentle and caring man who loved caring for his family. He could be both shy and mischievous, but mostly he was an easy-going man whose spirit was calming to be around. His quiet motto was live and let live, and he packed in a lot of life during his time with us.
