It has been told that Lewis was killed by Wyandotte Indians during an expedition in Ohio while serving under Col. William Crawford. Lt. John Stone, assisting Lt. Reno off the field, was taken prisoner by the Indians and condemned to be burned. Lt. Reno was wounded and when his friends wanted to carry him to safety he begged them to leave him and save themselves. He was failing so fast from loss of blood they knew he would die so they covered him with forest leaves to prevent, if possible, the Indians finding him and mutilating his body. This battle at Sandusky, Ohio, was called "Crawford's Defeat."
