Jacob Knepper was a son of Mary Elizabeth (née Brant) and Joseph Knepper. His parents were married in 1848 in Pickaway County, Ohio, and enumerated in 1850 in the county's Madison Township.

Jacob "Knipper" and Maria Painter were married on 15 April 1875 in Licking County, Ohio. The couple were enumerated in 1900, 1910, and 1920 in Marion, Grant County, Indiana, where Jacob Knepper worked as a carpenter and building contractor. The couple had no children.

The Joseph and Mary Knepper household was enumerated on 24 Aug 1850 in Madison Twp., Pickaway Co., Ohio. Because Jacob was born after the 1 Jun 1850 census date, he was not enumerated.

Jacob Knepper's death certificate shows that he was born 20 Aug 1850 in Adams Co., Indiana; his parents' identity unknown. (Grant Co., Indiana, death records, Book 6, p. 46.) The reported date of birth agrees with the 1900 census; the reported place of birth is not correct.

Jacob Knepper's widow, Maria, married William F. Pealer on 15 October 1925 in Wabash County, Indiana.
