I was a close friend in the last 10 years of her life. She was an extraordinary person. She had wanted to live to be 100, but almost made it to 102! Her philosophy of life was “I may grow old perhaps, but not today”. She played her organ every day. Prepared her own tax returns through age 95! She worked many years for, and retired from, ASARCO. She had an office job in downtown El Paso. She reached a point where she got tired of answering the phone saying “American Smeltering and Refining Company”. So one day she sent a letter to the corporate office suggesting they abbreviate the corporate name to ASARCO, and they did! She retired back in the days when you had to retire at age 65! But she continued to visit the office to check on things “because she didn’t believe they could function without her”!
