James E. Richardson was the fifth child of Benjamin and Mary Ann (Welch) Richardson. He served in the Civil War, having joined and was mustered in at Chicago 17 June 1861 as a Private in Company A 19th IL Infantry ("the Chicago Zouaves"). He was discharged 13 Sept 1863 to accept a promotion to 2nd Lieutenant USCT. He married in Nashville, Tennessee 27 July 1864 to Isabella M. Jones. He was discharged from the army for poor health and returned to Roscoe dying shortly afterwards. His widow became the second wife of his uncle Lionel Washburn Richardson.
