The Meridional (Abbeville, Vermilion Parish, LA), July 12, 1902:

Tuesday, July 8th, 1902, at 12 o'clock p.m., Jean Abadie died at his home in Abbeville after a long illness; aged 74 years.

In his death the town has lost one of its oldest and most honorable citizens, his family a good husband and a kind father. Mr. Abadie was a native of Vic en Bigorre, hautes Pyrenees, France, and came to America in 1855, locating a short time later to Abbeville, where his brother Louis Abadie was a merchant. Here he followed the trade of a saddler, and was regarded as an expert workman. In those days a good saddle cost from $25 to $30 and he did a brisk business. He was one of the founders of the original French Society and for many years held the responsible post of treasurer. He was at different times an alderman of the town. He married a daughter of the late Robt. F. Patten who with two daughters, Marie and Louise, and two sons, Louis and Claude, survive him. His funeral which took place at the Catholic church Wednesday evening was largely attended. A good man has been gathered to his fathers. May the sod rest light o'er thee old friend.
