Jul 8, 1909 from the Weekly Palladium: Old Resident Dies Thursday.

Matthais Mount, one of the oldest residents of the city died at his home at 2 o'clock Thursday morning after an illness of one month from cancer of the stomach. Deceased had been ill for more than a year but was only confined to this bed early in June.

Matthias Mount was born in Rock (sic - Rockingham) County North Carolina in July 1826 and at the time of his death was 83 years of age. Mr. Mount was twice married. In 1845 he was married in this state, his wife passing away late in the 70's. He then married Mrs. Ann Cloe. He came to Illinois when a young man in 1828 with his parents and settled on a farm in Christian County. When a young man he secured a
farm 6 miles south east of Pana. The title conveying the farm of 130 acres which was owned by Mr. Mount was signed by President Franklin Pierce in 1853.

At the time of his death all of his living children were at his bedside; they were Mrs. Easter Satterfield, Mr. John Mount, Mrs. George Perry, all of Pana; and Mrs. Mary Perryman of Hurley, South Dakota. Mr. Mount was proceeded in death by 5 children who were: Nathan, Lizzie, Rhoda, Jessie and Rosa. All the children were born to his first wife.

Mr. Mount was a highly respected citizen and well liked. he has been a retired farmer for many years owing to his physical weakness. The funeral services will be held at his late home at the corner of sixth and Maple 'Streets on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Fuson, pastor of the Baptist Church in charge.
