Jack was born Dec. 1, 1926, in New Castle, the son of late Nicholas and Virginia Schetrom Capitola.
Mr. Capitola married the former Veronica Sojack. They were married for 64 wonderful years. She preceded him in death on Feb. 26, 2012.
He was a Roman Catholic. Jack graduated from New Castle High School.
Following high school, Jack enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Jan. 15, 1944. He was stationed in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Jack earned the rank of Radioman third class. He received many decorations and citations, among those the World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with one star. Jack reentered the Navy on Oct. 30, 1950, in Cape May, N.J., and served two additional years. He received an Honorable Discharge on Feb. 27, 1952.
Jack was very active in the Local VFW Post 315, serving as past Quarter Master, past Pennsylvania State Quarter Master, and past District Commander. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed woodworking. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, friends and especially his grandchildren.
Mr. Capitola is survived by his son, John R. (Darlene) Capitola of Girard; daughter Kathleen (James E. Jr.) Murphy of Youngstown; brother Harold (Donna) Capitola of Salem, S.C.; sister Patricia (Thomas) Schweikert of New Castle; two granddaughters, Shannon A. Murphy and companion Steve Surgalski of Philadelphia and Jamie E. Murphy of Pittsburgh; one step granddaughter, Pam (Eric) Pesta of Columbus; and two step-great-grandsons, Nathan Pesta and Spencer Pesta, both of Columbus.
In addition to his parents and wife, Veronica, Jack was preceded in death by two brothers, William Schetrom and Russell Capitola; and three sisters, Grace Micco, Barbara Rogan and Beverly Jeffries.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
