James was born in Dorset, Devonshire (today known as Devon County), England. His parents were Amos Membery and Sarah (Maish) Membery. James had 3 children by his first wife, Mary (Bristol) Membery: Amos Allen (b. 1846), Catherina (b. 1848), and Coleman Bristol (b. 1850, probably died before 1855). He lived with his first family in Canada. He came to the U.S. with his second wife, and their children were born and raised in Wisconsin. The first wife later moved to New York with two of her children. I have not yet found the first family on Find a Grave in Canada or in the U.S.
