Race Car Driver. He was a member of a racing family consisting of father Melvin "Tony" Bettenhausen, and brothers Tony Jr. and Merle Bettenhausen. His early racing experience was in midgets where he had twenty-seven United States Motor Club wins. He went on to win two sprint car and two USAC Silver Crown championships. He had a brief stint competing in NASCAR scoring four top-10 finishes in eight starts with his best finish coming at Michigan International Speedway in 1974. He won six USAC Indy Car races and made twenty-one Indianapolis 500 starts. His highest finish in the Memorial Day race was in 1980 finishing in third place after starting in the thirty-second position. He was a member of the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame (1993) and National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame (1998).
